Ehime Prefecture

Ehime Prefecture is an administrative region on Shikoku, Japan, facing the Seto Inland Sea. Its capital is Matsuyama.

Shikoku: Shikoku is the smallest of Japan’s four main islands, divided into four prefectures. Ehime occupies Shikoku’s northwestern part.
Dōgo Onsen: Dōgo Onsen is a historic hot spring district in Matsuyama, centered on a bathhouse dating to 1894. The hot spring is one of Ehime’s best-known cultural attractions.
Iyo Province: Iyo Province was a historical province covering much of present-day Ehime on Shikoku. It was the territorial predecessor to modern Ehime Prefecture.
Kagawa Prefecture: Kagawa Prefecture is a prefecture on northeastern Shikoku, facing the Seto Inland Sea. It borders Ehime to the east and shares the island’s northern coastline.
Shikoku Pilgrimage: The Shikoku Pilgrimage is a Buddhist route visiting 88 temples associated with the monk Kūkai. Several pilgrimage temples lie in Ehime, traditionally known as the route’s “enlightenment” stage.
Seto Inland Sea: The Seto Inland Sea is a body of water between Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu. Its coastline shapes Ehime’s maritime geography and regional connections.
Shimanami Kaido: The Shimanami Kaido is a road-and-cycle route crossing islands and bridges between Onomichi and Imabari. Its Ehime terminus draws cyclists and links the prefecture to Honshu.
Meiji Restoration: The Meiji Restoration was the political transformation that restored imperial rule in Japan beginning in 1868. The reforms that followed replaced domains and provinces with prefectures.
Tokushima Prefecture: Tokushima Prefecture occupies eastern Shikoku and faces the Pacific Ocean and the Kii Channel. It is one of Ehime’s neighboring prefectures on Shikoku.
Matsuyama Castle town: Matsuyama Castle town is the historic urban center that developed around Matsuyama Castle in Ehime. Its streets and landmarks preserve the prefectural capital’s castle-town identity.
