Eid al-Adha

Eid al-Adha is an Islamic festival commemorating Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice his son and God’s provision of a substitute. It is marked by communal prayer, charity, and livestock sacrifice where practiced.

Abraham in Islam: Abraham, called Ibrahim in Arabic, is a prophet and patriarch in Islamic tradition. The festival recalls Ibrahim’s willingness to obey God’s command.
Eid prayer: Eid prayer is a congregational Islamic prayer performed on the mornings of Eid festivals. It begins Eid al-Adha’s public observance before the sacrifice.
Islamic calendar: The Islamic calendar is a lunar calendar of twelve months used to date Muslim observances. Its lunar months determine when Eid al-Adha occurs each year.

Islamic animal sacrifice: Islamic animal sacrifice is the slaughter of permitted animals under religious rules, especially during Eid al-Adha. Its rules govern how the festival’s qurbani is carried out.
Dhu al-Hijjah: Dhu al-Hijjah is the twelfth month of the Islamic calendar and the month of Hajj. Eid al-Adha begins on its tenth day.
Eid al-Adha in different countries: Eid al-Adha is observed through locally shaped customs across Muslim communities worldwide. National practices vary in prayer, public holidays, and arrangements for sacrifice.
Zakat: Zakat is the obligatory almsgiving that constitutes one of Islam’s Five Pillars. Eid al-Adha’s charitable distribution echoes Islam’s wider duties of giving.
Halal: Halal describes what Islamic law permits, including foods and methods of animal slaughter. The animal and its slaughter must meet relevant halal requirements.
