Eight-Nation Alliance

The military coalition of Austria-Hungary, Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, and the United States that intervened in China during the Boxer Rebellion.

Battle of Tianjin: A July 1900 battle in which allied forces captured Tianjin’s walled city from Qing defenders. Capturing Tianjin secured a key staging point on the advance toward Beijing.
Boxer Rebellion: An uprising in northern China from 1899 to 1901 directed against foreign influence and Chinese Christians. The rebellion created the crisis that brought the eight powers into military cooperation.
Alfred Gaselee: A British general who commanded the multinational expedition that captured Beijing in 1900. He led the principal allied force during its advance on the capital.
Boxer Indemnity: The financial reparations imposed on China under the 1901 Boxer Protocol. The coalition’s campaign ended with a massive indemnity burden on the Qing government.
Triple Entente: The pre–First World War understanding linking Britain, France, and Russia. Unlike this temporary expeditionary coalition, the Triple Entente was a durable strategic alignment.
Gaselee Expedition: The 1900 multinational military expedition that advanced from Tianjin to relieve the foreign legations in Beijing. This expedition was the alliance’s central operational campaign.
Boxer Movement: A network of Chinese martial and ritual societies whose members opposed foreign influence and Christianity. The movement’s attacks and siege helped trigger the coalition’s intervention.
Edward Hobart Seymour: A British admiral who led an unsuccessful international relief expedition toward Beijing in June 1900. His failed first relief attempt preceded the larger campaign associated with Gaselee.
Eight-Nation Alliance occupation of Beijing: The allied military occupation of Beijing after foreign forces captured the city in August 1900. Occupation extended the coalition’s influence beyond battlefield victory.
Central Powers: The First World War alliance centered on Germany, Austria-Hungary, and the Ottoman Empire. Two members of the Boxer-era coalition later fought together against other former participants.
