Ein Sof

Ein Sof is the infinite, unknowable aspect of God in Kabbalah, beyond attributes, distinctions, and limits. It is the source from which divine manifestation unfolds.

Tzimtzum: A Kabbalistic doctrine in which God withdraws or conceals divine presence to make room for creation. It describes how finite creation can emerge without containing or circumscribing Ein Sof.
Kabbalah: A tradition of Jewish mysticism concerned with the nature of God, creation, and the soul. Ein Sof is a central concept within this mystical tradition.
Bahir: A short medieval Jewish mystical text that helped establish early Kabbalistic symbolism. Its imagery of divine light and hiddenness helped prepare the language later used for Ein Sof.
Maimonides: A medieval Jewish philosopher who argued that God’s essence cannot be described through positive attributes. His philosophical account of divine unknowability parallels Ein Sof while following a different intellectual tradition.
Kabbalistic prayer: Jewish prayer practices interpreted through Kabbalistic symbolism and the structure of the sefirot. Prayer can be understood as directing intention through divine manifestations toward their hidden source.
Sefirot: The ten attributes or emanations through which divine power is expressed in Kabbalah. They provide the principal account of divine manifestation below Ein Sof.
Ayin: A Hebrew term meaning “nothing” that Kabbalistic texts use for the hidden divine source. Its language of divine nothingness helps express what cannot be grasped as an attribute.
Sefer Yetzirah: An early Jewish mystical work describing creation through Hebrew letters and numbers. Its account of creation and divine expression forms part of the background to Kabbalistic speculation.
Neoplatonism: A philosophical tradition in which all reality proceeds from a transcendent first principle called the One. Its emanation model resembles Kabbalistic cosmology but is not identical to Ein Sof.
Kavanah: Focused intention or devotion in Jewish religious practice, especially during prayer. Kabbalistic prayer uses intention to orient worship toward divine realities beyond ordinary perception.
