Ejnar Hertzsprung

Ejnar Hertzsprung (1873–1967) was a Danish astronomer who helped establish stellar classification and co-developed the Hertzsprung–Russell diagram, relating stars’ luminosities to their spectral types.

Hertzsprung–Russell diagram: A plot that relates stars’ luminosities to their surface temperatures or spectral types. Hertzsprung independently developed the diagram that bears his name alongside Henry Norris Russell.
Parallax: The apparent shift of a nearby object against distant backgrounds when viewed from different positions. Distance estimates let Hertzsprung calibrate the intrinsic brightness of nearby stars.
Henry Norris Russell: An American astronomer who independently developed a diagram relating stellar luminosity to spectral type. Russell’s parallel work combined with Hertzsprung’s to produce the Hertzsprung–Russell diagram.

Annie Jump Cannon: An American astronomer who organized stellar spectra into the temperature sequence still used in stellar classification. Her spectral classifications supplied a key axis for interpreting Hertzsprung’s luminosity comparisons.
Leiden Observatory: A Dutch astronomical observatory founded in 1633 and associated with major research in stellar astronomy. Hertzsprung became director of Leiden Observatory in 1935.
Stellar classification: The organization of stars into categories based on properties such as spectra, temperature, and luminosity. Hertzsprung’s measurements helped make stellar categories more physically meaningful.
Absolute magnitude: A measure of a star’s intrinsic brightness, defined as its apparent magnitude at a standard distance of ten parsecs. Comparing absolute magnitudes exposed stars that were unusually luminous for their spectral types.
