El Capitan

El Capitan is a granite monolith on the north side of Yosemite Valley in Yosemite National Park, California. Its sheer face rises about 900 metres above the valley floor and is a landmark of rock climbing.

Granite: Granite is a coarse-grained intrusive igneous rock composed chiefly of quartz and feldspar. El Capitan’s resistant granite forms its immense, exposed face.
The Nose: The Nose is a prominent climbing route following the central prow of El Capitan’s southeast face. This celebrated route established El Capitan as a destination for big-wall climbing.
Warren Harding: Warren Harding was an American rock climber who led the first ascent of The Nose on El Capitan in 1958. His team’s ascent opened the era of big-wall climbing on El Capitan.
Ahwahneechee: The Ahwahneechee are the Indigenous people associated with Yosemite Valley and its surrounding region. Their homeland and history predate the park and its climbing fame.
Free solo climbing: Free solo climbing is climbing without ropes or protective equipment. Honnold’s ascent of El Capitan made this high-consequence style widely visible.

Royal Robbins: Royal Robbins was an American rock climber who helped establish Yosemite as a center of technical climbing. His ascents and style debates shaped the standards applied to El Capitan climbs.
Yosemite National Park: Yosemite National Park is a protected area in California’s Sierra Nevada, known for granite cliffs, waterfalls, and giant sequoias. El Capitan lies within the park, whose protection shapes access and stewardship.
The Dawn Wall (film): The Dawn Wall is a 2017 documentary about Tommy Caldwell and Kevin Jorgeson’s free climb on El Capitan. The film brought the wall’s sustained climbing challenge to a broad audience.
