Elamite language

Elamite was an extinct language of ancient Elam, in what is now southwestern Iran. It was written in several forms of cuneiform from the third to first millennia BCE.

Elamite cuneiform: A syllabic script adapted from Mesopotamian cuneiform to write Elamite. It is the principal writing system through which Elamite is known.
Proto-Elamite: An undeciphered proto-writing system used in southwestern Iran near the end of the fourth millennium BCE. Its relationship to the later Elamite language remains uncertain.
Persepolis Fortification Archive: A large archive of administrative tablets from Persepolis, mostly dating to the reign of Darius I. Its Elamite tablets record resource distribution and labor in the Achaemenid heartland.
Edwin Norris: A nineteenth-century British scholar who studied cuneiform inscriptions and published work on Old Persian and Elamite. His studies of the Behistun inscription advanced early understanding of Elamite.
Linear Elamite decipherment: The ongoing effort to identify and read the signs of Linear Elamite inscriptions. Its readings could clarify whether and how the script represents the Elamite language.
Linear Elamite: A partly deciphered script used in southwestern Iran during the late third millennium BCE. Its inscriptions may preserve an early, distinct way of writing Elamite.
Susa: An ancient city in southwestern Iran that served as a major political and cultural center of Elam. Susa produced many of the inscriptions and archives documenting Elamite.
Persepolis Treasury Archive: A collection of administrative tablets documenting payments at Persepolis under Darius I and Xerxes I. Its Elamite records show the language in official accounting.
François Lenormant: A nineteenth-century French Assyriologist who investigated ancient Near Eastern languages and scripts. His research contributed to early efforts to interpret Elamite inscriptions.
Proto-Elamite decipherment: The unresolved effort to interpret the signs and texts of the Proto-Elamite writing system. Without a decipherment, its connection to Elamite remains unknown.
