Electoral Palatinate

The Electoral Palatinate was a territory of the Holy Roman Empire ruled by the Count Palatine of the Rhine, one of the empire’s prince-electors.

County Palatine of the Rhine: A medieval and early modern territory whose ruler held the hereditary office of Count Palatine of the Rhine. The Electoral Palatinate developed from this wider Palatine inheritance.
Prince-elector: A high-ranking prince entitled to elect the Holy Roman emperor. The Palatine ruler’s electoral office made the territory one of the empire’s leading political entities.
