Electorate of Bavaria

The Electorate of Bavaria was a territory of the Holy Roman Empire ruled by the Bavarian Wittelsbach dynasty. Bavaria received an electoral vote in 1623, during the Thirty Years’ War.

Maximilian I, Elector of Bavaria: The Wittelsbach ruler of Bavaria from 1597 to 1651 and a leading Catholic ally of the Habsburg emperor. His support for Ferdinand II brought Bavaria its electoral dignity.
Prince-elector: A prince of the Holy Roman Empire entitled to participate in choosing the king of the Romans, usually elected emperor. Bavaria’s ruler joined this small college after receiving electoral status.
Ferdinand II, Holy Roman Emperor: The Habsburg emperor from 1619 to 1637, whose policies and alliances helped drive the Thirty Years’ War. He granted Maximilian the electoral dignity in 1623.
Electorate of the Palatinate: A territory of the Holy Roman Empire ruled by the Palatine branch of the Wittelsbach dynasty and traditionally represented by an elector. Its vote was temporarily transferred to Bavaria after Frederick V’s defeat.
Battle of White Mountain: The 1620 battle in which imperial and Catholic League forces defeated the Bohemian revolt near Prague. Its aftermath strengthened Maximilian’s position in the imperial settlement.

Ferdinand Maria, Elector of Bavaria: The Wittelsbach ruler of Bavaria from 1651 to 1679, known for maintaining neutrality during much of his reign. His rule sustained the electorate after the Peace of Westphalia.
War of the Spanish Succession: A European conflict fought from 1701 to 1714 over succession to the Spanish throne and the balance of power. Bavaria’s alliance with France brought occupation and the temporary loss of its electorate.
Frederick V of the Palatinate: The Protestant elector who accepted the Bohemian crown in 1619 and lost his lands and electoral status after defeat. His displaced Palatine vote was transferred to Bavaria in 1623.
