Electorate of Cologne

An ecclesiastical principality of the Holy Roman Empire, ruled by the Archbishop of Cologne as a prince-elector. Its territories lay chiefly along the Rhine and extended into Westphalia.

Prince-elector: A prince of the Holy Roman Empire entitled to elect the king of the Romans. The archbishop's electoral vote made Cologne one of the empire's seven original electorates.
Archdiocese of Cologne: A Roman Catholic ecclesiastical territory centered on Cologne and headed by its archbishop. The electorate's rulers derived their ecclesiastical office from this archdiocese.
Cologne War: A 1583–1588 conflict over the Cologne electorate after Archbishop Gebhard Truchsess von Waldburg converted to Protestantism. The war preserved the electorate's Catholic character and brought a new ruling dynasty.
