Electorate of Mainz

An ecclesiastical principality of the Holy Roman Empire, ruled by the archbishop of Mainz, who held one of the empire’s prince-electorates.

Prince-elector: A ruler entitled to elect the Holy Roman Emperor under the empire’s constitutional order. The archbishop of Mainz held one of the empire’s electoral votes.
Diocese of Mainz: A Roman Catholic diocese centered on Mainz, with origins in the late Roman period. The electorate developed from the territorial and institutional power of this diocese.
