Electorate of Saxony

A state of the Holy Roman Empire ruled by the Wettin dynasty, whose ruler held the title of prince-elector from 1356 to 1806.

Golden Bull of 1356: A constitutional decree that established procedures and privileges for electing the Holy Roman Emperor. It formally granted Saxony’s ruler the electoral dignity.
Prince-elector: A high-ranking ruler entitled to participate in choosing the Holy Roman Emperor. The Saxon ruler’s electoral vote defined the state’s distinctive imperial status.
Frederick the Wise: A Wettin ruler of Saxony who protected Martin Luther during the early Reformation. His protection of Luther made Saxony a decisive early Reformation center.
