Electorate of Trier

An ecclesiastical principality of the Holy Roman Empire ruled by the archbishops of Trier, who held the right to elect the German king, until its dissolution in 1803.

Archbishopric of Trier: The Roman Catholic diocese and ecclesiastical province centered on Trier, whose archbishops also governed a secular territory. The principality grew from the archbishopric’s lands and authority.
Prince-bishop: A bishop who also governed a secular territory as a prince within the Holy Roman Empire. The archbishop of Trier combined ecclesiastical office with princely rule.
