Electrical conductivity

Electrical conductivity measures how readily a material carries electric current. It is the reciprocal of electrical resistivity and depends on the material’s charge carriers and structure.

Electrical resistivity: Electrical resistivity measures how strongly a material opposes electric current; it is the reciprocal of conductivity. Its reciprocal relationship gives conductivity its defining quantitative meaning.
Electric current: Electric current is the rate at which electric charge flows past a point. Conductivity characterizes how readily a material supports this flow.
Four-terminal sensing: Four-terminal sensing measures electrical resistance using separate pairs of current and voltage contacts. Separating current injection from voltage sensing improves conductivity measurements.
Electrical insulator: An electrical insulator is a material that strongly resists the flow of electric current. Insulators have far lower conductivity than ordinary conductors.
Drift velocity: Drift velocity is the average directed motion of charge carriers in a material under an electric field. Conductivity links the field to the resulting charge flow.
Electric field: An electric field is a physical field that exerts force on electric charges. Conductivity relates field strength to current density in a material.
Four-point probe: A four-point probe is an instrument that estimates a material’s resistivity or sheet resistance using four contacts. It is a common method for measuring conductivity in thin films and bulk samples.
Electrical conductor: An electrical conductor is a material that allows electric charge to flow readily. Conductors are the high-conductivity counterpart in material classification.
Relaxation time: Relaxation time is the average interval between scattering events that interrupt a charge carrier’s motion. Longer intervals between collisions generally let carriers conduct more effectively.
Current density: Current density is electric current per unit cross-sectional area, represented as a vector. It is the local current quantity used in conductivity’s constitutive relation.
