Electrical connector

An electromechanical device joins electrical conductors to form a removable or permanent connection between circuits. It may also provide mechanical retention, insulation, and protection from the environment.

Electrical contact: A conductive interface that transfers electric current between joined components. The contacts form the conductive path across a mated connector.
Connector mating: The joining of compatible connector halves to establish electrical and mechanical contact. Mating brings opposing contacts together while alignment features guide engagement.
USB: A standard for connecting peripherals and transferring data and power between electronic devices. USB combines standardized connectors with data and power delivery in consumer electronics.
Wire wrapping: A wire termination method that tightly wraps a solid conductor around a sharp post. Wire wrapping creates a direct termination without a conventional mating connector.
Connector reliability: The ability of a connector to maintain specified electrical and mechanical performance over time. Wear, corrosion, vibration, and repeated mating can degrade connector performance.
Contact resistance: Electrical resistance at the interface between two conductive surfaces. Small contact resistance limits voltage loss and heating at the connection.
Crimp connection: A wire termination formed by compressing a metal terminal around a conductor. Crimping is a common way to attach wires to connector contacts.
Coaxial connector: A connector designed to preserve the geometry and shielding of a coaxial cable. Its controlled geometry helps limit signal reflections at radio frequencies.
Permanent splice: A lasting joint that electrically joins conductors without a routinely separable mating interface. A splice can replace a connector when later disconnection is unnecessary.
Galvanic corrosion: Corrosion caused by electrochemical reactions between dissimilar metals in electrical contact and an electrolyte. Material pairings and moisture can corrode connector contacts and raise resistance.
