Electrical frequency

Electrical frequency is the number of cycles per second in a periodic electrical signal, measured in hertz. It describes how quickly the signal repeats.

Period (physics): The time required for one complete cycle of a repeating process. Electrical frequency is the reciprocal of the signal’s period.
Alternating current: Electric current that periodically reverses direction. Its repetition rate is the frequency most often specified for electrical power.
Direct current: Electric current that flows in one direction without periodically reversing. An ideal steady direct current has no repeating cycle whose frequency can be specified.
Utility frequency: The nominal frequency supplied by an electrical power grid, commonly 50 or 60 hertz. It is the everyday grid-scale instance of electrical frequency.
Angular frequency: The rate of change of phase, measured in radians per unit time. It expresses the same repetition rate in radians per second rather than cycles per second.
Electric power system: An interconnected network that generates, transmits, and distributes electrical energy. Grid operation depends on maintaining a shared frequency across connected generators and loads.
Frequency modulation: A method of encoding information by varying a carrier wave’s instantaneous frequency. It uses controlled frequency changes rather than a single fixed repetition rate.
Grid inertia: The resistance of a power system’s frequency to rapid change, largely provided by rotating machines. It shapes how quickly grid frequency changes after generation or load disturbances.
Sinusoidal waveform: A smooth periodic waveform whose value varies as a sine or cosine function. Its repetition rate is the standard setting for defining electrical frequency.
Synchronous generator: A generator whose rotor speed is synchronized with the frequency of its alternating-current output. Its rotational speed sets the frequency delivered by many power stations.
