Electromagnetic field

A physical field with electric and magnetic components that carries electromagnetic interactions and can propagate through space as electromagnetic waves.

Lorentz force: The force on a charged particle due to electric and magnetic fields. It describes how the electromagnetic field acts on charged matter.
Electric field: A vector field that gives the electric force per unit charge at each point. It is one component of the electromagnetic field and responds to charge.
Michael Faraday: An English experimental physicist whose work established electromagnetic induction and the field concept. His lines of force helped replace action-at-a-distance descriptions with fields.
Antenna: A conductor or arrangement of conductors that transmits or receives electromagnetic waves. Antennas convert currents into radiated fields and incoming waves into signals.
Newtonian action at a distance: A physical description in which bodies exert forces on one another without a mediating field traveling through space. It contrasts with field-based accounts that assign physical states throughout space.
Electromagnetic wave: A propagating oscillation of electric and magnetic fields that transports energy through space. It is the field's traveling-wave form in regions without nearby sources.
Magnetic field: A vector field associated with magnetic forces and with moving electric charges and currents. It is the other component, linked to the electric field by changing fields.
James Clerk Maxwell: A Scottish physicist who formulated the classical equations of electromagnetism. His theory showed that electromagnetic disturbances propagate at the speed of light.
Waveguide: A structure that confines and directs electromagnetic waves along a path. Its geometry controls how fields carry signals through devices.
Quantum electrodynamics: The quantum field theory describing interactions between charged particles and the electromagnetic field. It extends the classical field picture to quantum effects and photons.
