Electromagnetic interference

Electromagnetic interference is unwanted electromagnetic energy that disrupts the operation of an electrical or electronic system. It can travel through conducting paths or couple through electric or magnetic fields.

Electromagnetic coupling: Transfer of energy between electrical systems through electric or magnetic fields. Interference reaches equipment when fields couple energy into its circuits.
Electromagnetic compatibility: The ability of electrical equipment to operate as intended without causing or suffering unacceptable electromagnetic disturbance. Interference is the disturbance that compatibility requirements seek to control.
Electromagnetic compatibility testing: Testing that assesses whether equipment meets limits for electromagnetic emissions and immunity. These tests reveal whether a device emits or withstands excessive interference.
Electromagnetic radiation: Energy that propagates through space as coupled electric and magnetic fields. Radiation is a physical form of energy; it becomes interference when it disrupts equipment.
Conducted emission: Electromagnetic energy carried along wires or other conductive paths from a source. This path brings interference into a device through its power or signal connections.
Electromagnetic spectrum: The full range of electromagnetic radiation frequencies, from radio waves to gamma rays. The frequency of unwanted energy affects how it couples into equipment.
CISPR: An international standards organization that develops requirements for radio-frequency disturbance from electrical and electronic equipment. CISPR standards set emission limits used to reduce interference between devices.
Crosstalk: Unwanted signal transfer between separate channels or circuits. Crosstalk is a specific coupling problem that can occur within a larger interference environment.
Radiated emission: Electromagnetic energy emitted into space by an electrical source. Radiated energy can affect equipment without a direct conductive connection.
Radio frequency: The portion of the electromagnetic spectrum used for radio transmission, generally from 3 kHz to 300 GHz. Radio-frequency energy is a common source of interference in electronic systems.
