Electron gas

An electron gas is a model in which many electrons move through a material as a mobile, interacting system. It helps explain collective electrical and thermal behavior in metals and other materials.

Fermi–Dirac statistics: The quantum-statistical distribution governing fermions across available energy states. It determines which electron states are occupied, even at low temperatures.
Free-electron model: A model that treats electrons in a solid as moving independently through an average potential. The electron gas is the many-particle foundation behind this broader class of models.
Drude model: A classical model of electrical conduction that treats electrons as particles undergoing collisions. It predicts basic metal transport while omitting quantum statistics central to the electron gas.
Electron liquid: A strongly correlated phase of electrons whose interactions dominate their collective behavior. It emphasizes correlation beyond the weakly interacting gas approximation.
Fermi energy: The highest occupied energy in a system of fermions at absolute zero. It sets the characteristic energy scale for electron-gas behavior.
Jellium model: An idealized model of electrons interacting against a uniform positive background. It isolates electron-electron effects by smoothing the ions into a uniform charge.
Sommerfeld model: A theory of metallic electrons that applies Fermi–Dirac statistics to the free-electron model. It turns the electron-gas picture into a successful account of metal heat capacity and conduction.
Fermi liquid theory: A framework describing interacting fermions through long-lived quasiparticles near the Fermi surface. It captures interaction effects that an ideal electron gas leaves out.
Pauli exclusion principle: The rule that identical fermions cannot occupy the same quantum state. It forces electrons to fill distinct states and creates degeneracy pressure.
Density of states: The number of available quantum states per energy interval in a system. It connects the electron gas's energy spectrum to measurable material properties.
