Electroreception

Electroreception is the detection of naturally occurring electric fields by specialized sensory systems. It helps animals locate prey, navigate, and communicate.

Ampullae of Lorenzini: Gel-filled sensory organs in sharks and rays that detect weak electric fields. These organs provide a classic example of passive electroreception.
Electric field: A physical field that exerts force on electric charges. Electroreception begins when an external electric field reaches sensory tissue.
Shark: A cartilaginous fish with electroreceptive organs that can detect weak bioelectric fields. Sharks use electroreception to find prey hidden in sediment or darkness.
Magnetoreception: The detection of magnetic fields by an animal's sensory system. Magnetic fields guide orientation, but electroreception detects electric fields.
Theodore H. Bullock: An American neurobiologist known for research on nervous systems, including electroreception in fishes. Bullock's comparative studies helped establish electroreception as a widespread vertebrate sense.
Tuberous electroreceptor: A receptor that detects higher-frequency electric fields, especially those produced by nearby animals. These receptors support active electrolocation in weakly electric fish.
Electric potential: Potential energy per unit charge at a point in an electric field. Many electroreceptors respond to voltage differences across their sensory surfaces.
Ray: A cartilaginous fish in the group Batoidea, many of which detect electric fields with ampullae. Bottom-dwelling rays use electric cues while searching for buried prey.
Mechanoreception: The sensing of physical deformation, pressure, vibration, or movement. Both can detect nearby disturbances in water, but only electroreception responds to electric fields.
Hans Lissmann: A German-British zoologist who studied electric organs and electrolocation in fish. His experiments showed that weakly electric fish use self-generated fields to sense surroundings.
