Elephant Island

A mountainous island in Antarctica’s South Shetland Islands, known as the refuge of Ernest Shackleton’s stranded Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition in 1916.

Endurance expedition: Ernest Shackleton’s 1914–1917 Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition, whose ship Endurance was crushed by Antarctic ice. Its stranded Weddell Sea party reached Elephant Island after months on the ice.
South Shetland Islands: An Antarctic archipelago north of the Antarctic Peninsula, including Elephant Island. Elephant Island is one of this archipelago’s eastern islands.
Antarctic research station: A facility in Antarctica used to support scientific research and field operations. Chile’s station on Elephant Island supports seasonal scientific and logistical activity.
