Elephanta Caves

The Elephanta Caves are a complex of rock-cut Hindu and Buddhist temples on Elephanta Island near Mumbai. Their most celebrated sculpture is a monumental, three-faced image of Shiva.

Rock-cut architecture: Architecture formed by carving structures directly into natural rock rather than assembling separate building materials. The caves belong to this architectural tradition, with sanctuaries and sculptures carved into basalt.
Basalt: A dark, fine-grained volcanic rock formed when lava cools at or near Earth’s surface. The caves and their sculpture were carved into the island’s basalt.
Trimurti of Elephanta: A monumental three-faced sculpture of Shiva in the main cave on Elephanta Island. This image is the complex’s best-known sculpture and its defining visual landmark.
Kalachuri dynasty: A group of Indian dynasties that ruled parts of central and western India during different periods. The Kalachuris are among the dynasties associated with the caves’ likely early medieval patronage.

Western Deccan: The western portion of the Deccan plateau, a region shaped by distinct political and artistic traditions. Elephanta’s art belongs to the wider religious and political history of this region.
World Heritage Convention: The 1972 international treaty establishing cooperation to identify and protect cultural and natural heritage. This treaty provides the framework for Elephanta’s World Heritage status.
