Eleusinian Mysteries

Ancient Greek initiation rites held at Eleusis in honor of Demeter and Persephone. Initiates were promised a more blessed fate after death, while the central rites remained secret.

Lesser Mysteries: A springtime set of preliminary rites associated with the Eleusinian Mysteries, traditionally held at Agrae near Athens. They prepared candidates before the main initiation at Eleusis.
