Elisha Otis

Elisha Otis was an American inventor whose elevator safety brake stopped a car from falling if its hoisting cable broke. His device helped make passenger elevators practical.

Elevator safety brake: A mechanism that arrests an elevator car when its hoisting system fails or the car moves unsafely. Otis’s best-known invention used spring-loaded jaws to grip guide rails when cable tension disappeared.
Otis Elevator Company: An American elevator manufacturer founded in 1853 and later known as Otis Worldwide. Otis established the company to manufacture and sell elevators incorporating his safety device.
Charles Otis: An American businessman who helped establish the Otis elevator enterprise with his brother Elisha. Charles joined Elisha in building the company that commercialized their elevator work.
Passenger elevator: An elevator designed to carry people between floors of a building. Otis’s safety brake helped establish passenger elevators as a credible form of transport.

Hoisting machinery: Equipment that raises and lowers loads using ropes, cables, drums, pulleys, or related mechanisms. The brake addressed the danger of a hoisting cable failing while an elevator car was suspended.
Yonkers, New York: A city on the Hudson River immediately north of New York City. Otis worked and developed elevator equipment in Yonkers before his company expanded.
