Elizabeth Fry

Elizabeth Fry (1780–1845) was an English Quaker philanthropist and prison reformer. Her work improved conditions for women prisoners and helped shape penal reform in Britain and beyond.

Gaols Act 1823: A British law that introduced reforms to prison administration, including limits on fees and provisions for female prisoners. Fry’s evidence and advocacy helped build support for statutory prison reforms.
Newgate Prison: A London prison where Elizabeth Fry began her prominent work with women prisoners in 1813. Conditions in its women’s wards prompted her sustained program of visits and reform.
