Elliptic regularity

Elliptic regularity is the principle that solutions of elliptic differential equations gain smoothness when their equations and data are sufficiently regular. It connects the regularity of a solution to that of its coefficients, forcing terms, and boundary conditions.

Elliptic operator: A differential operator whose principal symbol is nonzero away from the zero cotangent vector. Its nondegenerate principal symbol is the structural condition behind elliptic regularity.
Weak solution: A function satisfying a differential equation after the equation is integrated against test functions. Regularity theory often starts with weak solutions that lack classical derivatives.
Poisson equation: The equation stating that the Laplacian of a function equals a prescribed source. Its solutions gain derivatives according to the regularity of the source and boundary data.
Hyperbolic partial differential equation: A partial differential equation whose principal symbol has hyperbolic structure and supports wave-like propagation. Unlike elliptic equations, hyperbolic equations propagate singularities rather than generally smoothing them.
Elliptic estimate: An inequality controlling derivatives of a function through an elliptic operator applied to it and lower-order norms. These estimates quantify the gain in solution regularity.
Distribution: A generalized function defined by its action on smooth test functions. Elliptic equations can be interpreted distributionally before their solutions are known to be smooth.
Laplace equation: The equation setting the Laplacian of a function equal to zero. Its solutions are smooth in the interior, a basic instance of elliptic regularity.
Parabolic partial differential equation: A partial differential equation combining evolution in time with diffusion-like spatial behavior. Parabolic smoothing arises through time evolution, unlike the spatial estimates of elliptic regularity.
Sobolev space: A function space measuring a function and its weak derivatives through integrability norms. Elliptic estimates commonly show that weak solutions belong to higher-order Sobolev spaces.
Principal symbol: The polynomial in cotangent variables formed from the highest-order coefficients of a differential operator. Its positivity or nonvanishing identifies the ellipticity that drives regularity.
