Elmer Rice

Elmer Rice (1892–1967) was an American playwright and novelist whose socially engaged dramas include the Pulitzer Prize-winning play Street Scene. He experimented with theatrical form while addressing urban life, class, and social injustice.

Street Scene: Elmer Rice’s 1929 play portrays the residents of a New York tenement and won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. This Pulitzer-winning drama became Rice’s best-known portrait of urban community and hardship.
Expressionism: Expressionism is an artistic movement that distorts outward reality to convey subjective experience or social pressures. Rice used expressionist devices to dramatize the protagonist’s mental and social confinement.

On Trial: Elmer Rice’s 1914 courtroom drama uses flashbacks to present evidence in a murder trial. Its reversed chronology helped establish Rice’s early reputation for theatrical innovation.
