Elmina Castle

Elmina Castle is a Portuguese-built fortress on Ghana’s coast, founded in 1482 and later controlled by the Dutch and British. It became a major site of the transatlantic slave trade.

Door of No Return: A name given to passages through which enslaved Africans were taken to ships for forced passage across the Atlantic. The castle’s seaward passageway became a powerful symbol of departure into enslavement.
Portuguese Empire: A global maritime empire that expanded from Portugal through trade, settlement, and conquest from the fifteenth century onward. Portuguese officials built Elmina as a fortified base for commerce on the West African coast.
Ghanaian independence: The end of British colonial rule and establishment of the independent state of Ghana in 1957. After independence, Elmina became part of Ghana’s national history and heritage.
Diogo de Azambuja: A Portuguese nobleman who led the expedition that built São Jorge da Mina in 1482. He commanded the construction of the fort that became Elmina Castle.

João II of Portugal: King of Portugal from 1481 to 1495, who supported Portuguese expansion along the African coast. His reign oversaw the expedition that established the castle in 1482.
Cape Coast Castle: A British-built fortress in Ghana that served as a major center of the transatlantic slave trade. It is a nearby slave-trading fort often compared with Elmina’s Portuguese origins and Dutch history.
Akan peoples: A group of related peoples in West Africa, concentrated chiefly in present-day Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire. Akan communities lived and traded in the region before and during European control of the fort.
Fort Jesus: A Portuguese fortress in Mombasa, Kenya, built in the late sixteenth century to protect the harbor. It provides an Indian Ocean comparison to Portugal’s fortified Atlantic trading base at Elmina.
