Embouchure

Embouchure is the shaping and positioning of the mouth and lips to control airflow and sound on a wind instrument. Its precise form depends on the instrument and playing technique.

Acoustic impedance: Acoustic impedance describes how much a system resists or supports oscillating airflow or sound. The player's mouth and the instrument interact through the impedance presented at the mouthpiece.
Brass instrument: A brass instrument produces sound when a player's vibrating lips excite a resonant air column. Brass playing depends directly on lip vibration at a cup-shaped mouthpiece.
Respiratory system: The respiratory system moves air into and out of the lungs and supports gas exchange. Breath pressure and flow supply the air that embouchure shapes and regulates.
Fingering (music): Fingering is the placement of fingers on an instrument to change its sounding pitch or articulation. Fingering changes the instrument's configuration, while embouchure changes the player's oral configuration.
Muscle memory: Muscle memory is the durable improvement in movement that comes from repeated practice and neural adaptation. Repeated playing can make effective embouchure adjustments more reliable and automatic.
Lip reed: A lip reed is a vibrating pair of lips that periodically interrupts airflow to excite an instrument. Brass embouchure forms the vibrating valve that starts and sustains the instrument's sound.
Woodwind instrument: A woodwind instrument produces sound through an air stream interacting with a reed or an edge tone. Embouchure controls the reed or air jet in ways distinct from brass lip vibration.
Diaphragmatic breathing: Diaphragmatic breathing uses coordinated movement of the diaphragm and surrounding muscles to draw and release air. Players coordinate breath support with the small adjustments made at the mouth.
Vibrato: Vibrato is a periodic variation in pitch, intensity, or both that enriches a sustained musical tone. Vibrato adds expressive fluctuation; embouchure provides the underlying means of sound production and control.
Tone color: Tone color is the quality that distinguishes sounds of the same pitch and loudness. Embouchure changes can alter a wind instrument's tone color as well as its pitch and volume.
