Knowra Germ layer Germ layer A primary layer of cells in an embryo that gives rise to particular tissues and organs during development. In most animals, the main germ layers are ectoderm, mesoderm, and endoderm.
Ectoderm : The outer primary germ layer of an embryo, which forms the epidermis and nervous system. It produces the embryo’s outer covering and much of its nervous system.
Primitive streak : A structure in the early mammalian embryo through which cells migrate during gastrulation. Cells passing through it contribute to mesoderm and endoderm formation.
Organogenesis : The process by which organs form and develop from embryonic tissues. Organ formation depends on the contributions and interactions of germ-layer derivatives.
Diploblasty : An animal body plan with two embryonic germ layers, typically ectoderm and endoderm. Diploblastic animals lack the mesoderm found in triploblastic body plans.
Mesoderm : The middle primary germ layer, which forms structures including muscle, bone, blood, and kidneys. It gives rise to many connective, muscular, circulatory, and urogenital tissues.
Notochord : A rod of embryonic tissue that organizes development along the body’s head-to-tail axis. Signals from it help pattern nearby mesoderm and induce neural development in ectoderm.
Congenital disorder : A condition present at birth that arises from genetic or developmental factors. Errors in germ-layer specification or development can cause congenital abnormalities.
Triploblasty : An animal body plan with three embryonic germ layers: ectoderm, mesoderm, and endoderm. This body plan is defined by the presence of all three primary germ layers.
Endoderm : The inner primary germ layer, which forms the linings of the digestive and respiratory tracts and associated organs. It produces internal epithelial linings and organs such as the liver and pancreas.
Neural induction : The process by which embryonic signals specify ectodermal cells to become neural tissue. It illustrates how interactions between germ layers shape a major tissue fate.
