Emi Koussi

Emi Koussi is a massive shield volcano in northern Chad, the highest mountain in the Sahara and the highest point in the Tibesti Mountains.

Shield volcano: A broad volcano built mainly from repeated flows of low-viscosity lava. Emi Koussi’s broad profile reflects the shield-volcano form.
Lava flow: A stream or sheet of molten rock that moves across the ground during an eruption. Repeated lava flows built Emi Koussi’s broad volcanic edifice.
Tarsou Ataram: A summit caldera within the Emi Koussi volcanic complex in northern Chad. This caldera is a defining landform at Emi Koussi’s summit.
Topographic prominence: A summit’s height above the lowest contour line encircling it and no higher summit. Its isolation makes Emi Koussi a striking high point above the Sahara.
Tibesti Mountains: A volcanic mountain range in northern Chad and southern Libya. Emi Koussi is the range’s highest summit.
