Emil Gilels

Emil Gilels (1916–1985) was a Soviet pianist renowned for performances of Beethoven, Brahms, and other classical and Romantic repertoire.

Beethoven piano sonatas: A cycle of 32 solo piano works by Ludwig van Beethoven, spanning his early, middle, and late periods. Gilels’s performances of the sonatas are central to his recorded Beethoven legacy.
Heinrich Neuhaus: A Russian and Soviet pianist and teacher whose pupils included Sviatoslav Richter and Emil Gilels. Neuhaus taught Gilels at the Moscow Conservatory and influenced his musical formation.
Odesa: A major port city on the Black Sea in southern Ukraine. Gilels was born in Odesa and began his musical training there.
Soviet pianism: The piano performance tradition cultivated by musicians and institutions in the Soviet Union. Gilels became one of its most visible representatives during the Cold War.

Leopold Stokowski: A British-American conductor known for his orchestral career and collaborations with major soloists. Gilels made his United States debut with Stokowski and the Philadelphia Orchestra in 1955.
