Émile Borel

Émile Borel (1871–1956) was a French mathematician and politician whose work helped establish modern measure theory and probability, and advanced the study of functions.

Borel set: A member of the smallest collection of sets containing every open set and closed under complements and countable unions. Borel’s work on function theory helped develop the set-theoretic framework that gives these sets their name.
Borel summation: A method for assigning values to certain divergent series by transforming and averaging their coefficients. Borel devised this summation method to extend the usefulness of divergent series.
Henri Lebesgue: A French mathematician who developed measure theory and the integral now bearing his name. Lebesgue extended the measure-theoretic foundations closely connected with Borel’s work.
Institut Henri Poincaré: A Paris research institute for mathematics and theoretical physics, founded in 1928. Borel helped establish this institute as a center for mathematical and scientific research.
Modern probability theory: The mathematical theory of random events, expressed through probability spaces and measures. Borel helped establish the measure-theoretic foundations on which this theory developed.
Borel measure: A measure defined on the Borel sets of a topological space. Borel sets provide the domain on which this central measure-theoretic object is defined.
Borel–Laplace transform: A transform-based procedure used to recover sums of certain divergent series from their Borel transforms. It develops Borel’s summation method into a tool for analyzing divergent expansions.
René Baire: A French mathematician known for foundational work on functions, category, and continuity. Baire and Borel helped establish modern classifications of functions and sets.
Académie des sciences: A French learned society that promotes and evaluates scientific research. Borel’s scientific career included membership and leadership in this national institution.
Borel normal number: A real number in which every finite digit block occurs with the limiting frequency expected in a given base. Borel proved that almost all real numbers are normal, connecting measure to digit frequencies.
