Émile Zola

Émile Zola (1840–1902) was a French novelist, journalist, and playwright whose novels applied naturalist methods to social life. His public defense of Alfred Dreyfus made him a central figure in the Dreyfus Affair.

Germinal: An 1885 novel by Émile Zola about a miners’ strike in northern France. Its depiction of labor, poverty, and collective revolt exemplifies Zola’s social fiction.
