Emirate of Sharjah

The Emirate of Sharjah is one of the seven constituent emirates of the United Arab Emirates, with territory on the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman.

Sharjah: Sharjah is the capital city of the Emirate of Sharjah and a major cultural and commercial center. The capital concentrates the emirate’s government, museums, universities, and urban life.
Trucial States: The Trucial States were sheikhdoms along the southern Persian Gulf coast that entered treaties with Britain. Sharjah was one of the sheikhdoms that became a founding emirate of the UAE.
Sharjah Biennial: The Sharjah Biennial is an international contemporary-art exhibition held in Sharjah. It has made the emirate a prominent platform for contemporary art in the region.
Emirate of Dubai: The Emirate of Dubai is a constituent emirate of the United Arab Emirates, known for its global commercial and tourism hub. Dubai’s global-city model contrasts with Sharjah’s stronger emphasis on culture and education.
Khor Fakkan: Khor Fakkan is a port city on the Gulf of Oman, surrounded by territory belonging to Sharjah. Its east-coast location gives Sharjah access beyond the Persian Gulf.

Emirate of Ajman: The Emirate of Ajman is the smallest of the seven constituent emirates of the United Arab Emirates. Ajman is surrounded by Sharjah, making their neighboring urban territories closely intertwined.
Kalba: Kalba is a coastal city on the Gulf of Oman and an exclave of the Emirate of Sharjah. This eastern exclave illustrates Sharjah’s geographically separated territories.
Pearl diving: Pearl diving is the practice of harvesting natural pearls from marine oysters, historically a major Gulf industry. Pearling supported Sharjah’s coastal economy before oil transformed the region.
