Emmanuel Levinas

Emmanuel Levinas (1906–1995) was a French philosopher who made responsibility to other people, encountered as irreducibly other, central to philosophy. His work recast ethics as first philosophy.

The Other: In Levinas’s philosophy, another person whose irreducible difference resists reduction to the self’s concepts. The Other names the person to whom Levinas says responsibility is owed.
Ethics as First Philosophy: The view that ethical relations are more fundamental than ontology or theories of knowledge. Levinas’s central claim gives ethical obligation priority over questions about what exists.
