Empathy

Empathy is the capacity to understand another person’s perspective or share their emotional state. It includes distinct processes that can occur together or separately.

Affective empathy: Affective empathy is the vicarious experience of another person’s emotional state. It captures the feeling-sharing component of empathy.
Mirror neuron: A mirror neuron is a neuron that responds both when an action is performed and when a similar action is observed. Mirror-neuron activity has been proposed as one route for mapping observed actions onto one’s own motor system.
Sympathy: Sympathy is concern or sorrow for another person’s hardship, without requiring the same feeling or perspective. Sympathy can motivate care even when emotional sharing is absent.
Clinical empathy: Clinical empathy is a healthcare professional’s understanding of a patient’s perspective and communication of that understanding. It connects empathic understanding to patient care and clinical communication.
Empathy–altruism debate: The empathy–altruism debate concerns whether empathic concern can motivate helping for another’s sake rather than to reduce one’s own distress. It tests whether empathy produces altruism or only self-interested relief.
Cognitive empathy: Cognitive empathy is the ability to infer another person’s thoughts, feelings, or perspective. It describes understanding another’s state without necessarily feeling it.
Anterior insula: The anterior insula is a brain region involved in integrating bodily signals, emotion, and salient events. It is active in studies of sharing another person’s pain and emotion.
Compassion: Compassion is concern for suffering combined with a motivation to alleviate it. Unlike empathy alone, compassion explicitly includes an orientation toward helping.
Empathy in education: Empathy in education is the use of perspective-taking and emotional understanding in teaching and student relationships. It can shape how teachers interpret student needs and respond to conflict.
Empathy gap: An empathy gap is a failure to appreciate how a different emotional or bodily state shapes another person’s judgment or experience. It shows why understanding another’s situation can remain inaccurate despite empathic intent.
