Emperor Dezong of Tang

Emperor Dezong ruled the Tang dynasty from 779 to 805. His reign combined efforts to strengthen imperial finances with major rebellions and growing reliance on regional military governors.

Anshi Rebellion: A devastating rebellion against the Tang dynasty from 755 to 763 that weakened imperial power and strengthened regional military governors. Its aftermath left Dezong confronting military governors whose autonomy had grown during the rebellion.
Yang Yan: A Tang dynasty chancellor and fiscal official who devised the Two Tax Law. As Dezong’s chancellor, he designed the fiscal reform that became the reign’s signature policy.
Emperor Daizong of Tang: A Tang emperor who ruled from 762 to 779 and succeeded in restoring the dynasty after the Anshi Rebellion. Daizong was Dezong’s father and left him a court still contending with post-rebellion disorder.
Jingyuan mutiny: A military mutiny in Chang’an in 783 that drove Emperor Dezong from the capital. The mutiny became the sharpest crisis of his reign and forced him into flight.
Two Tax Law: A Tang fiscal reform introduced in 780 that assessed households and landowners twice yearly, largely according to property and income. Dezong adopted this reform to replace older tax systems and increase revenue.
Salt monopoly: A state-controlled system for taxing and selling salt, a major source of revenue in imperial China. Dezong’s government relied heavily on salt revenues to fund the state.
Emperor Suzong of Tang: A Tang emperor who ruled from 756 to 762 during the Anshi Rebellion. Suzong was Dezong’s grandfather, linking his succession to the dynasty’s rebellion-era recovery.
Zhu Ci rebellion: A rebellion led by Zhu Ci, who proclaimed himself emperor in Chang’an during the crisis of 783–784. Zhu Ci’s revolt followed the Jingyuan mutiny and challenged Dezong’s claim to the throne.
Tang dynasty: A Chinese imperial dynasty that ruled from 618 to 907 and oversaw a period of political and cultural influence. Dezong’s policies and crises unfolded during the dynasty’s late, weakened phase.
Wang Shuwen: A Tang court official associated with a reformist faction during Emperor Shunzong’s brief reign. His faction emerged from court politics shaped by Dezong’s late reign and succession.
