Emperor Go-Daigo

Emperor Go-Daigo ruled Japan from 1318 to 1339 and briefly restored direct imperial government in 1333. His failure to accommodate warrior elites helped lead to the Ashikaga shogunate and a divided imperial court.

Kamakura shogunate: Japan’s first durable warrior government, established by the Minamoto clan in the late twelfth century. Its dominance over the court became the authority Go-Daigo sought to overthrow.
Genkō War: The conflict from 1331 to 1333 that brought down the Kamakura shogunate. Go-Daigo’s rebellion became the war that ended the regime he opposed.
Southern Court: The imperial court based at Yoshino that continued Go-Daigo’s line during the Nanboku-chō period. Go-Daigo established this court after Ashikaga forces took Kyoto.
Emperor Go-Daigo’s tomb: The mausoleum of Emperor Go-Daigo at Mount Yoshino in Nara Prefecture. Its location at Yoshino commemorates the court Go-Daigo established in exile.
Hōjō clan: A samurai clan that controlled the Kamakura shogunate as regents for much of its history. Its regents held power when Go-Daigo began conspiring against the shogunate.
Kusunoki Masashige: A samurai commander who supported Go-Daigo during the wars against the Kamakura and Ashikaga regimes. His guerrilla campaigns helped sustain Go-Daigo’s cause against superior forces.
Northern Court: The imperial court in Kyoto backed by the Ashikaga shogunate during the Nanboku-chō period. Its rival claim embodied the authority Ashikaga Takauji established against Go-Daigo.
Kitabatake Chikafusa: A Japanese court noble and historian who defended the legitimacy of Go-Daigo’s imperial line. His political writing gave a durable historical argument for Go-Daigo’s claim.
Emperor Go-Fushimi: A Japanese emperor of the early fourteenth century from the Jimyōin imperial line. The rivalry between his line and Go-Daigo’s Daikakuji line shaped succession politics.
Nitta Yoshisada: A samurai leader whose 1333 campaign helped destroy the Kamakura shogunate. His attack on Kamakura turned the rebellion into a decisive military victory.
