Emperor of China

The sovereign ruler of China’s imperial dynasties, traditionally legitimized by the Mandate of Heaven and styled the Son of Heaven.

Mandate of Heaven: A doctrine that a legitimate ruler governs with Heaven’s approval, which can be withdrawn for misrule. It explained why emperors ruled and why dynasties could be overthrown.
Qin Shi Huang: The first emperor of a unified China, who ruled from 221 to 210 BCE. He established the title huangdi after conquering the rival states.
Emperor Wu of Han: The Han emperor who ruled from 141 to 87 BCE and expanded the empire’s territory and institutions. His reign illustrates the reach and costs of a powerful early empire.
Empress Dowager Cixi: A Qing court leader who exercised power as regent without holding the emperor’s title. Her political authority shows that influence at court did not always belong to the sovereign.
Confucianism: A philosophical and ethical tradition centered on moral cultivation, social relationships, and humane government. Confucian ideals supplied influential standards for evaluating imperial conduct.
Son of Heaven: A title expressing the ruler’s unique relationship to Heaven and responsibility for earthly order. It framed the emperor as mediator between Heaven and the human realm.
Qin dynasty: The short-lived dynasty that unified China in 221 BCE and created centralized imperial rule. Its institutions set precedents for later emperors despite its brief existence.
Empress Wu Zetian: The only woman in Chinese history to rule in her own name as emperor, founding the Zhou dynasty. Her reign tested assumptions about who could hold the imperial title.
Chinese republic: The republican state established in China after the Qing dynasty’s collapse in 1912. It replaced hereditary sovereignty with a formally republican system.
Tributary system: A set of diplomatic practices through which neighboring states acknowledged Chinese superiority and exchanged tribute for recognition and trade. It projected the emperor’s prestige beyond the boundaries of direct rule.
