Emperor Shōmu

Emperor Shōmu was the 45th emperor of Japan, reigning from 724 to 749. His rule is associated with Buddhist state-building and the creation of major temples and images.

Tōdai-ji: A Buddhist temple in Nara whose Great Buddha hall became one of Japan’s largest historic wooden buildings. Shōmu ordered its construction as the central temple of a nationwide Buddhist protection project.
Empress Kōmyō: A Japanese empress consort of the Nara period and the wife of Emperor Shōmu. She shared his Buddhist patronage and established charitable institutions at the court.
Emperor Shōmu's accession: The 724 succession that brought Shōmu to the Japanese throne after Emperor Genshō abdicated. His accession began a reign marked by court factionalism and repeated capital relocations.

Emperor Kōnin: The 49th emperor of Japan, who reigned from 770 to 781. His accession followed decades of succession disputes that began with Shōmu’s heirs.
Emperor Monmu: The 42nd emperor of Japan, who reigned from 697 to 707 and was Shōmu’s father. Shōmu inherited a throne whose succession had been shaped by his father’s early death.
Hokkedō: A hall at Tōdai-ji associated with the worship of Fukūkenjaku Kannon and the Lotus Sutra. Its rites exemplify the close ties between state ceremony and Buddhist practice under Shōmu.
Kuni-kyō: A short-lived Japanese capital established by Emperor Shōmu in 740 in present-day Kyoto Prefecture. Shōmu relocated the court there during a period of political unrest and capital changes.
