Emperor Wu of Han

Emperor Wu (156–87 BCE) ruled the Han dynasty from 141 to 87 BCE. His expansion into Central Asia, diplomacy, and military campaigns helped establish conditions for the Silk Road’s growth.

Zhang Qian: A Han envoy whose missions to Central Asia gathered information and opened diplomatic contacts beyond China’s western frontier. Wu sent him west; his reports helped shape Han diplomacy toward Central Asia.
Han commanderies: Regional administrative and military districts through which the Han state governed territories and stationed officials and troops. Commanderies extended Han rule across newly secured western lands.
Protectorate of the Western Regions: A Han supervisory office established in 60 BCE to manage relations with states in the Western Regions of Central Asia. It formalized Han oversight of contacts opened during Wu’s era.
Li Guangli: A Han general who led major expeditions against Dayuan during Emperor Wu’s reign. His campaigns carried Wu’s pursuit of Central Asian horses into military action.
Han–Xiongnu War: A prolonged series of conflicts between the Han dynasty and the Xiongnu confederation, especially intense under Emperor Wu. Wu’s campaigns against the Xiongnu sought control of northern approaches and western corridors.
Han–Xiongnu treaty: A diplomatic arrangement in which the Han court exchanged gifts and marriage ties with the Xiongnu to reduce frontier conflict. Wu abandoned reliance on this accommodation in favor of sustained military pressure.
Han–Roman relations: Indirect contacts between the Han and Roman worlds, mediated largely through Central Asian states and long-distance trade. The westward networks Wu helped foster eventually connected distant imperial economies.
Wei Qing: A Han general who led successful campaigns against the Xiongnu during Emperor Wu’s reign. His victories helped secure the northern frontier for Wu’s westward strategy.
Dayuan campaign: A Han military expedition against Dayuan in the Ferghana Valley, fought in 104–101 BCE to obtain prized horses and compel submission. This expedition pushed Han forces deep into Central Asia along routes later used by traders.
Han army: The military forces of the Han dynasty, including infantry, cavalry, and frontier garrisons. Its long-range campaigns and garrisons made western expansion enforceable.
