Empire of Nicaea

The Empire of Nicaea was a Byzantine successor state established in western Anatolia after the Fourth Crusade captured Constantinople in 1204. It restored Byzantine rule in Constantinople in 1261 under Michael VIII Palaiologos.

Fourth Crusade: A crusade diverted to Constantinople, which it captured and sacked in 1204. Its conquest displaced the Byzantine emperor and helped create Nicaea as a successor state.
Council of Nicaea (1208): An assembly of Byzantine clergy and officials that crowned Theodore I Laskaris emperor in 1208. The coronation gave Nicaea an imperial center of authority while Constantinople was under Latin rule.
Battle of Pelagonia: A 1259 battle in which Nicaean forces defeated a coalition led by the Despotate of Epirus. The victory weakened a rival that could obstruct Nicaea’s expansion toward Constantinople.
