Empire

An empire is a large state or group of territories governed by one sovereign authority, often encompassing diverse peoples and regions. It commonly expands through conquest, settlement, or political control.

Imperial administration: Systems of officials, laws, and institutions used to govern territories under an empire. Provincial officials and central institutions translated sovereign rule into everyday government.
Akkadian Empire: An ancient Mesopotamian empire founded by Sargon of Akkad in the twenty-fourth century BCE. It is among the earliest known territorial empires, linking conquest with centralized rule.
Nation-state: A sovereign state whose political boundaries are associated with a shared national identity. The nation-state ideal links territory and national membership more closely than many empires did.
Decolonization: The process by which colonies gain independence from an imperial power. Decolonization dismantled many modern empires and created new sovereign states.
Province: A territorial administrative division within a larger state. Provinces gave imperial governments a way to organize and supervise distant regions.
Achaemenid Empire: The Persian empire founded by Cyrus the Great and expanded by his successors. Its provincial system and accommodation of local customs became influential models of imperial governance.
Federation: A state in which power is divided constitutionally between a central government and constituent units. A federation distributes authority by constitutional design rather than necessarily through imperial hierarchy.
Cultural assimilation: The process by which individuals or groups adopt the cultural practices of another society. Imperial institutions sometimes promoted assimilation to reshape subject populations.
Tribute: A payment or transfer of goods made by a subordinate polity or people to a ruler. Tribute extracted resources while allowing some local rulers to remain in place.
Roman Empire: The state ruled by Roman emperors from the late first century BCE until the fall of the Western Empire. Roman rule became a lasting reference point for later claims to imperial authority.
