Empress Jingū

Empress Jingū is a legendary Japanese ruler traditionally placed in the third century. Japanese chronicles credit her with leading an expedition to the Korean peninsula, though historians dispute the story’s historicity.

Nihon Shoki: An eighth-century Japanese chronicle that combines origin traditions, court history, and accounts of relations with neighboring states. Its account is the fullest early source for Jingū’s life and overseas expedition.
Sankan征伐: The conquest of the Three Korean Kingdoms, a claim in Japanese chronicles associated with Empress Jingū. This is the central episode behind the tradition that Jingū led an overseas campaign.
Ōjin: A legendary Japanese emperor traditionally identified as the son of Empress Jingū. His birth during Jingū’s expedition anchors the succession story attached to her reign.
Japanese imperialism: Japan’s pursuit of overseas empire and political domination, especially from the late nineteenth century through 1945. Modern imperial narratives invoked Jingū’s alleged conquest to frame expansion into Korea as ancient precedent.

Chūai: A legendary Japanese emperor, traditionally Jingū’s husband, whose death precedes her rule in the chronicles. The chronicles present Jingū’s regency as beginning after Chūai’s death.
Japanese occupation of Korea: Japan’s colonial rule over Korea from 1910 to 1945. The occupation intensified disputes over historical claims linked to Jingū and ancient Korean-Japanese relations.
Yamato period: An early era in Japanese history when a polity centered in the Yamato region expanded and consolidated power. Jingū’s traditional chronology places her within the formative era of Yamato rule.
Gwanggaeto Stele: A monumental inscription erected in 414 to commemorate King Gwanggaeto of Goguryeo and his campaigns. Its contested account of warfare in Korea is often compared with Japanese claims about Jingū.
