End of the Cold War

The End of the Cold War was the late twentieth-century dissolution of the geopolitical rivalry between the United States and the Soviet-led bloc, culminating in the Soviet Union’s collapse in 1991.

Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty: A 1987 U.S.–Soviet agreement that eliminated an entire class of ground-launched intermediate-range missiles. It marked a major, verifiable arms-control breakthrough during the thaw in superpower relations.
Mikhail Gorbachev: The Soviet leader from 1985 to 1991 who introduced major reforms and pursued cooperation with the West. His policies loosened Soviet control in Eastern Europe and changed the terms of superpower competition.
Post-Soviet states: The fifteen independent countries that emerged from the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Their independence replaced a superpower federation with new national governments and borders.
Cold War: The prolonged geopolitical rivalry between the United States and its allies and the Soviet Union and its allies, beginning after World War II. The end of the Cold War marks the termination of this broader rivalry.
Revolutions of 1989: The largely peaceful overthrow of communist governments across Central and Eastern Europe in 1989. These upheavals rapidly dismantled the Soviet-led political order in Europe.
Perestroika: Mikhail Gorbachev’s program of economic and political restructuring in the Soviet Union. Its reforms aimed to revive the Soviet system but also exposed and widened its internal weaknesses.
Warsaw Pact: A Soviet-led military alliance of Eastern European states, formally dissolved in 1991. Its dissolution removed the rival military bloc that had structured Europe’s division.
Détente: A period of reduced tension and increased diplomatic engagement between the United States and the Soviet Union, especially during the 1970s. Earlier easing of tensions did not dissolve the opposing blocs or end their rivalry.
Fall of the Berlin Wall: The opening of Berlin Wall crossings on November 9, 1989, which ended the barrier’s role in dividing the city. Its opening became the clearest public symbol of the collapse of Europe’s Cold War division.
Glasnost: Mikhail Gorbachev’s policy of greater openness in public discussion and the media. Reduced censorship enabled public criticism that weakened communist governments’ authority.
