Energy consumption

Energy consumption is the amount of energy used by a device, system, or process over a period of time. It is commonly measured in joules or kilowatt-hours.

Energy: Energy is a conserved physical quantity that can be transferred or transformed to produce changes. Consumption measures energy transferred or transformed during a chosen interval.
Energy meter: An energy meter measures the energy transferred through a circuit or supplied to a customer. It records accumulated use rather than merely the instantaneous rate.
Energy efficiency: Energy efficiency is the ratio of useful output to energy input. Efficiency can improve while total consumption rises if activity grows.
Energy demand: Energy demand is the amount of energy required by users over a period or under specified conditions. Consumption records realized use, while demand also describes requirements that may go unmet.
Primary energy: Primary energy is energy in natural resources before conversion into fuels or electricity. It includes conversion losses that end-use consumption figures may omit.
Power: Power is the rate at which energy is transferred or converted. Multiplying power by elapsed time gives energy consumption when power is steady.
Electricity meter: An electricity meter measures electrical energy delivered to a building or other installation. It is the familiar instrument behind household electricity-consumption readings.
Energy conservation: Energy conservation is the reduction of energy use through changed behavior or reduced activity. It lowers consumption without necessarily changing equipment efficiency.
Electricity demand: Electricity demand is the electrical power required by consumers at a given time or across a period. Its peaks determine the capacity grids must be able to supply.
Final energy consumption: Final energy consumption is energy delivered to end users for their own use. It identifies consumption at the point where households and industries receive energy.
