Knowra Energy engineering Energy engineering Energy engineering designs and improves systems that produce, convert, distribute, store, and use energy. It combines engineering methods with efficiency, reliability, cost, and environmental constraints.
Thermodynamics : The study of heat, work, energy, and the physical laws governing their transformations. Its laws set the limits on every energy conversion process.
Power generation : The production of electricity from primary energy sources or other energy carriers. Generation is the central conversion step in most electric energy systems.
Building energy modeling : Computer simulation of a building’s energy use, systems, and thermal performance. Models compare designs and estimate heating, cooling, and lighting demand.
Energy conservation : The reduction of energy consumption through changed behavior, operations, or service demand. Conservation reduces demand, while engineering often improves the systems serving that demand.
Energy conversion : The transformation of energy from one form into another, such as chemical energy into electricity. Engineering systems connect sources to useful outputs through conversion.
Electric power system : The interconnected infrastructure that generates, transmits, distributes, and controls electrical power. It links generation engineering to the networks that deliver electricity.
District heating : A network that distributes heat from centralized sources to multiple buildings. Shared heat networks can use sources that individual buildings cannot access efficiently.
Renewable energy : Energy derived from sources replenished naturally on human timescales, including sunlight, wind, and flowing water. It is a major supply pathway, but energy engineering also covers nonrenewable systems.
Energy efficiency : The ratio of useful output to energy input in a process or system. Efficiency measures how much input energy reaches its intended use.
Electrical grid : A network of generators, transmission lines, substations, and distribution equipment supplying electricity. Grid design balances supply and demand across connected locations.
