Knowra Energy security Energy security Energy security is the reliable, affordable availability of energy supplies and infrastructure. It also includes resilience to disruptions and the ability to meet changing energy needs.
Energy supply : Energy supply is the production, import, and delivery of energy to users. Reliable supply is the foundation of energy security.
Energy policy : Energy policy is the set of public decisions governing energy production, distribution, and use. Governments use energy policy to balance reliability, cost, and other priorities.
Energy independence : Energy independence is the ability of a country to meet its energy needs without relying on external suppliers. Security can come from dependable trade, so independence is not its only route.
Resource curse : The resource curse is the tendency for resource-rich economies to experience weaker development or governance outcomes. Domestic energy abundance does not automatically produce economic or political security.
Energy infrastructure : Energy infrastructure comprises facilities and networks that produce, transform, transport, and distribute energy. Failures in pipelines, grids, ports, or terminals can interrupt otherwise available supplies.
Electricity grid : An electricity grid is the interconnected system that generates, transmits, and distributes electrical power. Grid reliability is a central part of energy security for electrified economies.
Energy affordability : Energy affordability is the ability of households and businesses to pay for energy services. Affordability is one dimension of security, but low prices alone do not ensure reliable supply.
Oil price shock : An oil price shock is a rapid, substantial change in oil prices that disrupts economic activity. Sudden price rises expose the economic costs of vulnerable energy dependence.
Strategic petroleum reserve : A strategic petroleum reserve is a government-held stockpile of crude oil for emergency use. Stored oil can cushion temporary supply disruptions.
Energy transition : The energy transition is the shift from fossil fuels toward lower-carbon energy systems. Changing technologies and supply chains create new security risks as well as opportunities.
