Engineered wood

Engineered wood is manufactured wood made by bonding veneers, strands, fibers, or particles with adhesives or other binders. Its structure can be tailored for consistent dimensions, strength, and efficient use of wood.

Plywood: A panel made by bonding thin wood veneers with adjacent grain directions usually perpendicular. Cross-laminated veneers give this product dimensional stability and strength in multiple directions.
Wood adhesive: An adhesive formulated to bond wood surfaces or wood elements in manufactured products. Adhesive chemistry governs bond strength, durability, and sometimes emissions.
Mass timber: A construction approach using large engineered wood elements as major building components. Engineered products such as laminated timber form the primary structure of mass-timber buildings.

Hot pressing: A manufacturing process that applies heat and pressure to consolidate materials and cure binders. Pressing forms panels to target thickness while curing their adhesive bonds.
Wood I-joist: A structural joist with engineered wood flanges joined by a thin web, often plywood or OSB. Its efficient I-shaped section spans floors and roofs while using less solid timber.
Cross-laminated timber: A large structural panel made by bonding lumber layers with alternating grain directions. Its layered construction contrasts with solid-sawn timber and illustrates engineered dimensional stability.
Wood utilization: The conversion of harvested wood into useful products while limiting unused material. Bonded strands and particles can use smaller pieces and residues that solid lumber cannot.
